New recycling and remanufacturing super site turns recycled glass into 1 billion bottles and jars each year
Our new $500 million glass recycling and remanufacturing factory is being built in Stapylton just south of Brisbane.
The facility, which represents the largest investment we have ever made, will recycle up to 200,000 tonnes of Queensland’s glass annually to produce 1 billion bottles a year. By doing this, recycling more of Queensland's glass we can avoid trucking 40,000 tonnes of glass into the state. The site will help us increase the average recycled glass content used by our glass manufacturing plants to 70%.

The site includes recycling, manufacturing and storage infrastructure. Using optical sorters, the glass will be recycled down to 3 mm in size before being taken to the furnaces to be remanufactured. By using an oxygen fueled furnace, as well as the installation of recycled glass cullet pre-heating technology, the site will have lower emissions compared to traditional glass manufacturing facilities. Finally, the finished goods warehouse and distribution centre will help maintain a constant supply of glass containers to customers.
Building next to our existing box factory and beverage can plant will create a beverage container precinct to further support customers.
The project is expected to be operational in 2025 and will create over 600 jobs in construction and 200 jobs once operational.
The project represents a massive expansion of our Queensland recycling and remanufacturing operations and is underpinned by a long term partnership with Asahi Beverages, and agreements with our customers Lion, Bundaberg and Coca Cola.

We are inviting construction contractors, sub-contractors and suppliers to register their expression of interest to be part of the construction of this new, state of the art facility.
Major bulk earthworks in progress

We’re finishing off the major bulk earthworks at our Yatala site in Queensland, the home to our new glass recycling and remanufacturing facility.
Over four months, we’ve been moving up to 500 trucks a day of soil to get the site ready for construction.

Environmental approvals and management plans
Visy is developing the Glass Recycling and Manufacturing Facility under EPBC 2022/09243 issued by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water.
The approval conditions describe the specific requirements to offset the development, including that Visy implement an Offset Management Plan and undertake reporting and monitoring to measure environmental performance of the offset and publish this information on the company website.
