Visy produces sustainably sourced recycled content and virgin papers
All of our Pulp and Paper mills have joint accreditation and are audited for ISO 9000 Quality Standards, AS 4801 Safety Systems and ISO 14001 Environmental Standards.
Visy and Sustainable Fibre Sourcing
Visy produces sustainably sourced recycled content and virgin papers for both local and export markets. This paper is the predominant input into the fibre packaging products we produce at our Board plants throughout Australia and New Zealand.
We're focused on promoting the rigour we place around fibre sourcing and the products we produce; whether it's through increased certification and further labelling or branding.
FOREST STEWARDSHIP COUNCIL® CERTIFIED
In September 2009, Visy achieved Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Chain-of-Custody certification for our six Australian recycled paper operations. This means paper produced by these mills is allowed to feature the widely recognised FSC Recycled logo.
When a product bears the FSC Recycled logo, it means that the fibre used to make it comes from predominantly post-consumer sources, such as kerbside collections, and commercial cardboard. Regular auditing by Visy ensures the origins of our recycled paper remains consistent with this certification.
FSC Chain of Custody standards ensure that Visy provides a link between the post-consumer waste and the product into which it is manufactured; from the forest to the consumer, including all successive stages of processing, transformation, manufacturing and distribution.
This mark currently only applies to our recycled paper operations and cannot be applied to any board products. Only operations with FSC CoC Certificate are allowed to label products with the FSC trademarks.
Visy is able to supply our FSC Recycled certificate on request.
RESPONSIBLY SOURCED KRAFT PAPER
We're committed to ensuring that our fibre inputs are from responsibly managed softwood plantations.
Our mill at Tumut uses plantation forest thinnings (Pulp Logs), and sawmill residues as inputs, to produce Kraft paper for both local and export markets.
Fibre suppliers who are not certified to an internationally recognised forest certification scheme are evaluated to ensure that they comply with PEFC and FSC requirements (PEFC/21‐31‐195, FSC® C116532)*.
Visy intends to avoid controversial fibre sources including:
a) Illegally harvested Wood or trade in illegal forest products
b) Wood in Violation of traditional and human rights
c) Wood sourced from areas where high conservation values are threatened
d) Wood from significant conversion of forests to plantations or non-forest use
e) Wood from trees that have been genetically modified
f) Wood in violation of any of the ILO Core Conventions As defined in the ILO Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work.
*As stipulated in Australian Forest Standard 4708, PEFC ST 2002:2013 and FSC-STD-40-005.
