case study
In late 2014, Visy approached a key Australasian infant formula manufacturer to determine how it could enter this dynamic and demanding market segment
Solution:
After extensive global benchmarking and auditing across our entire manufacturing process, Visy invested substantially to establish the region's leading solution to the infant formula segment. Visy enhanced their track and traceability systems to a new level from steel coil to finished can. A new quick-change and multi-colour printing press and integrated vision systems were purchased and our food can plants embraced nutraceutical standard systems and processes and a dedicated hygiene regime that achieved (and surpassed) traditional HACCP standards.
Significant investment has been made at our material preparation and printing facility (at Coburg) to achieve a HACCP accreditation and the Shepparton can plant was completely renovated throughout.
A positive air pressure environment was created at the Shepparton plant, and world leading technology was applied to our integrated vision systems so that we can identify and isolate any visual defects or foreign particles (inside or outside of the can). Filtered air blowers and magnetic belts were also installed, and a micro-biological testing regime established to make sure that any can leaving the Visy plant would conform to the strict standards needed to support this quality critical industry.
Finally, plastic pallets, dividers and top frames were sourced to ensure that all secondary packing for the pediatric or nutritional powder markets would be fibre and splinter free.
Outcome:
Since the completion of this investment program, most of the market’s major infant formula blenders and brand owners have now audited our manufacturing plants and we are progressively growing our share of these hygiene sensitive segments. Visy has redefined the standards for the supply of cans into this key market.
