The winners of the Chief Operating Officer’s HSE Awards 2019 were recently announced acknowledging the best practices from sites and individuals. This year we received 28 entries including 5 nominations for the individual communications award. The winners are:
Katrina Wakeling Communication Award awarded to Toby Wirth, Fleet Manager – Visy Recycling Gibson Island (Qld). Toby joined Visy Recycling in late 2017 and is commended for his enthusiasm and ability to identify and collaboratively develop innovative, practical solutions to safety and operational issues.
Risk Reduction Initiative Award (Safety or Environment) awarded to joint winners Visy Logistics and Visy Recycling’s Smithfield MRF.
Visy Logistics for their Driver Improvement Program that involved undertaking an in depth study of published literature, analysis of incident and injury data and a driver questionnaire. Visy Logistics also sought assistance from truck manufacturers to identify a prime mover that provides our drivers with safer cabin access and egress as well as other safety features.
Visy Recycling’s Smithfield MRF for their Cultural Sustainability and Improvement Program which involved developing key initiatives to reduce risks in the workplace such as AAAs (Authorised Access Areas), screen cleaning, isolation and lockout, height safety and sustainability of workplace safety culture.
Wellbeing and Healthy Workplace Award awarded to Visy Plastics in Heathwood (Qld) for the introduction of an electronic personal prestart check form which contains a set of questions covering wellbeing, safety and work preparedness (MySafeStart).
Energy / Carbon Footprint Reduction Award awarded to the Visy energy team and Visy Board in Gepps Cross for the rooftop solar and battery installation. The project achieved the following outcomes:
1.9mw solar installation completed
340kw Tesla battery installation underway
$700k funding from SA Government
Potential $500k per annum cost saving
15% reduction in carbon emissions (scope 1 and 2)
Waste Avoidance and Reduction Award awarded to Visy Plastics for the ANZ Performance Improvement Program, an initiative with a target reduction of 2% conversion costs across all manufacturing sites which equates to $2.546M by driving synergies and eliminating waste.
