Visy is proud to have won the 2018 Benjamin Tregoe Lifetime Impact Award to be presented in September by Kepner-Tregoe (KT). KT have worked with Visy since 2003 to pursue continuous improvement (CI) and process improvement programs in Australia and the award recognises Visy’s sustainable organisational success and longevity in their relationship with KT over the past fourteen years.
KT provide training and consulting services (the KT process) including Problem Solving and Decision Making, Project Management, Process Facilitators and Process Coaches.
CI continues to be a big part of Visy, and when utilised correctly employees have achieved great success and advancement in their careers. One such employee is Luke Krstanovski who was the Operations Manager for the Smithfield MRF and is now the NSW State Operations Manager. KT established a performance management system and a daily review process for Luke and his team. Luke set up the daily disciplines and structure for visual management and morning meetings to drive root cause analysis and problem solving. The team together improved the performance of the factory and the facility continues to perform as they build on better and more reliable processes.
Chris McComb was the Chemist at Visy Paper Mill 8 in Gibson Island when he first had the opportunity to receive KT training and lead a CI project as part of a program to deliver significant throughput improvements. Chris was involved in leading a project focused on establishing daily disciplines for operators and systematically investigating and addressing root causes of downtime. Chris went on to lead the Gibson Island operations, then Smithfield, and now, as GM Tumut, Chris is responsible for the production of all kraft product at Visy.
Peter Whittingham was the Operations Manager at Visy Paper Mill 4 in Coolaroo, the only factory in Australia making plaster board liner. This high quality product requires multiple grade and colour changes throughout every day’s schedule. KT established processes for individual accountability and performance management of daily systems. Peter led his team to drive daily disciplines and performance checks so that root cause was identified and dealt with in a timely manner. Peter is now GM Group Operations/Reliability Systems for Operational Excellence. Liz Moussa who was the CI Leader (KT trained) continued this application of daily discipline around review and Root Cause Analysis (RCA), and is now the Operations Manager of the mill. During the last 5 years the mill has improved year on year with tonnes per day increasing, downgrade reducing and quality claims substantially improved.
KT will also acknowledge the achievements of individual CI leaders within Visy who have facilitated and utilised KT process within their teams across the business. They will each receive a plaque and certificate for their achievements.
