Visy's Plastics business has a long history of providing quality products in the marketplace. Now, we're one of Australia's largest manufacturers of PET containers, producing more than 2.2 billion plastic containers and 1.8 billion plastic preforms in FY2013-14.
Food plastics is another booming business that's had an impact on Visy - and it's one area where our international partnerships definitely come in handy. We're fortunate to have relationships with selected global packaging companies, who give us access to the latest in plastics technologies from all around the world. That means we can give our customers access to these solutions as well.
In March 2012, Visy acquired HP Industries' PET custom moulding and Plastics businesses. This gives us access to new manufacturing technologies in injection stretch blow moulding and extrusion blow moulding using a range of polymers including High and Low Density Polyethylene, Polypropylene and Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC).
Our aim is to become the leading provider of sustainable plastics solutions covering a range of technology platforms in the food, beverage, household, personal care and pharmaceutical categories.
Raw materials and resins:
- Polyethylene terephthalate (PET)
- Polypropylene (PP)
- High-impact polystyrene (HIPS)
- High-density polyethylene (HDPE-2011)
- Ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH)
These raw materials and resins are recognised for their versatility. They help create products that have the capacity to cater to a range of types of filling applications (hot, warm, cold), providing an extended shelf-life. Plus, they're comparatively light-weight, which gives them an edge in terms of logistics too.
If you thought all PET bottles were pretty much the same, think again. There are countless different types of PET bottles - different colours, sizes, weights and finish types. They're also designed for all sorts of products, from carbonated soft drinks to beer and wine.
At Visy, we're familiar with all of them. We produce a large quantity of PET bottles, and our preforms are available in all shapes and sizes. The type of PET bottle we recommend depends on a number of things, including the product it will be used for, where it will be stored and what the customer's aesthetic requirements are.
One thing is certain though - whether you need a regular PET bottle, one with hot-fill capability or one with barrier technologies, Visy will have a preform for the job.
Non-alcoholic beverage bottles
Our lightweight water bottles range in sizes from 300ml to 2L.
- Carbonated soft drinks
Designed to withstand the filler pressure, our carbonated soft drink bottles hold their shape during long-term storage under internal pressure. Carbonated soft drink bottles range from 250ml to 3L.
- Juice and sports drinks
Juice and sports drink bottles are supplied for hot-fill, warm-fill and ambient-fill products. Hot-fill bottles are designed with necks that do not deform when heated, bases that also resist deformation and vacuum panels that control bottle collapse (which occurs when the hot contents cool and shrink). Juice and sports drink bottles range from sizes of 250ml to 3L.
Alcoholic beverage bottles
Ranging in size from 187ml to 1L, our PET wine bottle is ideal for the ready-to-consume purchase.
Visy offers a premium look and feel PET bottle for beer. These have many advantages over glass in terms of weight, durability and cost - making them ideal for occasions like festivals and BBQs.
- Hot-filled jars
PET hot-fill jars are a great example of the design flexibility Visy can offer. After a product is filled at a high temperature, the product cools and the internal volume reduces - creating a vacuum in the bottle.
When it comes to food, maintaining product quality is vital. Visy has developed a wide variety of food plastic solutions that do just that - and even better, they're cost-effective to produce. Visy is also a leader in producing polycarbonate cups, which give customers a sustainable and lightweight alternative to glass.
Food barrier containers
Barrier containers including cups and bowls are ideal for food sterilisation or aseptic filling. The container delivers shelf-stable and preservative-free contents that do not need refrigeration until they've been opened.
Food barrier containers can withstand temperatures from +15°C to +121°C and are resistant to water, salt and acid solutions, thereby retaining flavour.
Food barrier sheet
Our high-impact polystyrene (HIPS) barrier sheet is designed to give maximum protection against moisture, gas, food chemical changes and loss of flavour. The multi-layer plastic barrier sheet allows for hot-fill processing, while the thermo-formable barrier sheet can be used in form, fill and seal systems.
Sheets are made to meet individual specifications, with options in colours, strength and heat resistance.
Polycarbonate cups provide a safe, lightweight alternative to glass, and are increasingly popular at licensed venues and major events.
Our polycarbonate cups are:
- Robust in design, and can withstand industrial dishwasher cycles for up to 6 months without crazing or cracking
- Safe from harmful chemicals such as BPA, which is often found in polycarbonate alternatives
- Crystal clear in clarity
- Available in different shapes and sizes
- Easily printed or embossed with a logo for increased brand awareness and promotional value
Used for: pints, pots, schooners and tumbler glasses
