Cans are increasingly the preferred method of packaging across a number of food sectors; especially where ambient temperature supply chains prevail and where product integrity is paramount. Pack performance is the key to success in fish and seafood - cans remain the leader in terms of preservation, presentation and value.

As governments across the globe offer incentives aimed at increasing fruit and vegetable consumption, cans lead the pack as a means to provide food which is readily available and nutritionally preserved.

Significant growth in the infant formula market, lead by China, is driving expansion; Chinese legislation states that Stage 1 (new-born) formulas must be packaged in steel food cans.

Across the board, metal food cans outperform where value is important. Cans remain a low-cost pack type with strong basic functionality and extended shelf life performance.

Our time-poor lifestyles are a factor too - canned food demand is expected to grow in tandem with rapid growth in ‘ready meals’. China have already seen a 90% growth in this area from 2008 - 2013. Additionally, the demand for single serve portions (from 25g - 150g) is on the rise.

Ease of use also comes into play - the majority of the food can market is now easy open ends.
