The 2011 Visy Report is aptly titled 'Noteworthy Achievements'.
2011 has been a great year of achievements for Visy and those in this e-version and others in our full report demonstrate the very best of what sustainability is to Visy; minimising our impacts on the environment; investing in growth for Visy and our customers; and contributing to an inclusive society for our employees and the broader community.
Across Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, Vietnam and Malaysia, and trading offices in Singapore and China.
Visy employs more than 5,500 people across Australia,
New Zealand and Asia.
Richard Turner, Director of Safety and Sustainability
Note: Visy measures safety performance by TRIFR (Total Recordable Injury Frequency Rate) rather than only Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate (LTIFR) specifically. We believe the TRIFR, which includes LTIs (Lost Time Injury) and MTIs (Medically Treated Injury) gives a better picture for overall safety performance.
Visy began the commissioning of our stand-alone waste-to-energy plant at our Coolaroo site back in 2009. This plant represents a $50m investment in clean energy technology that will take waste from our recycling and recycled paper mill operations and convert it to valuable electricity and thermal energy.
When operating at full capacity, the plant is expected to deliver the following benefits:
Reduced electricity use from coal-fired power stations
The Coolaroo Clean Energy Plant will generate 3 megawatts of electricity, which is approximately 10% of the electricity requirements of our two onsite recycled paper mills.
Reduced consumption of natural gas, which is a non-renewable resource
The plant will also cogenerate 30 megawatts of thermal energy, which is approximately 50% of the natural gas requirements of the two recycled paper mills.
Reduced waste to landfill
About 100,000 tonnes of paper mill and recycling rejects that would otherwise have gone to landfill is used as fuel for the plant, contributing to reducing our impact on the environment.

"The 10% Challenge puts a stronger focus on our ongoing campaign to achieve greater energy efficiency across our business."
Royce De Sousa, GM Energy
In November 2011, Visy opened its energy from waste plant at our Coolaroo site in Victoria
Almost 26,000 tonnes of this increase was generated through our Recycling division.
In 2010-11
Most of this increase can be attributed to our Pulp and Paper division, most notably the expansion of our mill in Tumut.
**Greenhouse gas emissions includes scope 1 emissions only (i.e. emissions resulting from the combustion of fuels on-site and excludes emissions associated from the purchase of steam and electricity). Energy consumption also relates to the combustion of fuels on-site only. (i.e. excludes emissions associated from the purchase of steam and electricity)
