VISY REPORT

Welcome to the 2011 Visy e-Report.

Message from our COO

Embedding sustainability into the core of our business puts Visy in a strong position to manage risks and find innovative opportunities to ensure continued profitability and success into the future.

The 2011 Visy Report is aptly titled 'Noteworthy Achievements'.
2011 has been a great year of achievements for Visy and those in this e-version and others in our full report demonstrate the very best of what sustainability is to Visy; minimising our impacts on the environment; investing in growth for Visy and our customers; and contributing to an inclusive society for our employees and the broader community.

Chief Operating Officer

Note: Visy measures safety performance by TRIFR (Total Recordable Injury Frequency Rate) rather than only Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate (LTIFR) specifically. We believe the TRIFR, which includes LTIs (Lost Time Injury) and MTIs (Medically Treated Injury) gives a better picture for overall safety performance.

Visy Employee Community Fund

The Visy Employee Community Fund (VECF) was established in 2010 to promote community awareness, encourage employee engagement and raise much needed funds for charity.

Innovations

By bringing together market trends and insights, consumer research and global technologies, Visy is now better placed than ever to bring world's-best innovations to customers.

Case study: Single-use icebox Visy COOLERTM Innovation: Keep your drinks cool in the packaging you purchase them in. "The Visy Cooler is able to be placed in the normal cardboard recycling stream and eliminates the need for an extra (icebox) esky to carry your drinks around." Richard Macchiesi, GM Insights & Innovation
Case study: Visy beverage board Innovation: A more sustainable board solution coupled with new machinery and customised design. "Visy now offers a high wet strength substrate that enables us to recover 30% more fibre than current alternatives in the marketplace." Gus Carfi, Director Fibre Line
Climate change challenge

Moving to clean energy future. Finding innovative ways to turn waste into something valuable is what Visy does best.

Visy began the commissioning of our stand-alone waste-to-energy plant at our Coolaroo site back in 2009. This plant represents a $50m investment in clean energy technology that will take waste from our recycling and recycled paper mill operations and convert it to valuable electricity and thermal energy.

When operating at full capacity, the plant is expected to deliver the following benefits:

Reduced electricity use from coal-fired power stations

The Coolaroo Clean Energy Plant will generate 3 megawatts of electricity, which is approximately 10% of the electricity requirements of our two onsite recycled paper mills.

Reduced consumption of natural gas, which is a non-renewable resource

The plant will also cogenerate 30 megawatts of thermal energy, which is approximately 50% of the natural gas requirements of the two recycled paper mills.

Reduced waste to landfill

About 100,000 tonnes of paper mill and recycling rejects that would otherwise have gone to landfill is used as fuel for the plant, contributing to reducing our impact on the environment.

Environmental performance

As an integrated packaging manufacturer and recycling company, Visy has a responsibility to manage the environmental impacts of its products and operations.

  • Pulp & Paper

2010-11 per tonne of production compared to 2009-10

  • Energy

Energy used by type 2010-11 (GJ)

  • Energy Challenge
In September 2011, Visy signed on to the 10% Challenge, a public pledge to reduce our energy consumption by 10%. The Challenge will build on the great work already implemented in our organisation.

"The 10% Challenge puts a stronger focus on our ongoing campaign to achieve greater energy efficiency across our business."
    Royce De Sousa, GM Energy

  • Renewable Energy

In November 2011, Visy opened its energy from waste plant at our Coolaroo site in Victoria

  • Waste

Almost 26,000 tonnes of this increase was generated through our Recycling division.

  • Water

    In 2010-11

  • Emissions

Most of this increase can be attributed to our Pulp and Paper division, most notably the expansion of our mill in Tumut.

  • Emissions

**Greenhouse gas emissions includes scope 1 emissions only (i.e. emissions resulting from the combustion of fuels on-site and excludes emissions associated from the purchase of steam and electricity). Energy consumption also relates to the combustion of fuels on-site only. (i.e. excludes emissions associated from the purchase of steam and electricity)
